I made subtitles for some works by one of my favorite creators.

If anyone is interested in doing the same, here’s the full workflow I used.

How to create a subtitle file from foreign-language audio:

Use CapCut and its automatic subtitle/caption generation feature.

Generate subtitles from the audio, then export them as an .srt file. This gives you a subtitle file in the original language of the video.

How to translate an .srt file into your language:

Open Subtitle Edit and import your .srt file.

Go to Translate → Auto-translate.

Then choose the translation API you want to use. I personally recommend DeepL — the translation quality is very good, and its API provides a fairly generous free allowance.

Run the translation.

When it’s finished, use Save As and export the translated subtitles as a new .srt file.

After that, quickly go through the subtitles and clean up any garbage, recognition mistakes, unnecessary symbols, etc.

How to extract subtitles from a video that already has subtitles burned into the image:

If the video already contains visible subtitles that are part of the video itself, Subtitle Edit can extract them using OCR.

Open Subtitle Edit and use OCR burned-in subtitles...

This function recognizes subtitles directly from the video frames and converts them into editable subtitles.

Select the language of the subtitles before starting OCR. If you’re not sure what language they’re written in, just take a screenshot and upload it to Google Translate or another image translator to identify the language.

Then run the OCR process and export the result as an .srt file.

If necessary, you can then translate those subtitles using Translate → Auto-translate, as described above.

How to permanently add subtitles to the video:

Open Subtitle Edit and use Generate video with burned-in subtitles...

This will render the subtitles directly onto the video, so they become part of the actual image rather than a separate subtitle track.

If you have two different subtitle texts that need to appear in different parts of the screen, for example original subtitles and translated subtitles, give them different styles or colors and use the Margin settings to move one of them higher or lower on the screen.

Once everything looks right, start generating the video.

I strongly recommend selecting a hardware-accelerated GPU encoder or codec if you have a dedicated graphics card. Rendering with the GPU can be significantly faster than encoding everything on the CPU.

That’s basically the whole pipeline:

Video/audio → subtitles → .srt → translation/OCR → cleanup → burn subtitles back into the video.
